The goal of our excursion was two fold...Do some recon of the route to see exactly what I signed myself up for. Establish a baseline of my current fitness level, relative to where I need to be on race day.
During our two-ish hour trek/adventure, several truths were revealed to me, some were just important reminders...
- I love, love, love trail running
- I am crazy uncoordinated running down hill, especially when rocks are involved
- I must lose 10 lbs - this will just make running so much better/faster/easier/funner
- When getting a pedicure, no more callus removal (especially not the day before a long run)
- I'm fitter than I thought!
- I'm no where near the fitness level I need to be for Oct 4th (13.1 trail miles, with juicy hill work, in under 3.5 hours) Definitely doable, just not right now.
- Running up hill is HARD!
- Running down hill is HARD!
- I see a lot of hill repeats in my future
- My IT band needs some/a lot of strengthening/stretching
- Dropping trou on the trail just isn't fun
- Body Glide is my friend
- I need a new hat - My Active.com hat has been with me since the beginning of my fitness journey - but it's black and starting to fall apart. I'm constantly reminded on hot/sunny runs that I really need a white hat.
- V8 juice is the best recovery drink ever! (Not the low sodium shit)
- I have a lot of hard work ahead of me
- I have the most amazing, loving, supportive and patient husband!
As usual, I signed up for an event that "scares" me. Those seem to be the only kind that motivate me enough to do what really needs to be done. I picked a good one.
Anyone else wanna run 13.1 miles on Oct 4th with me?
